The Tolmezzo area

The capital and the political, economic and commercial centre of Carnia, Tolmezzo is a town with splendid palaces built in the seventeen hundreds, large squares and museums. A perfect place for shopping, the town centre is full of craftsmen’s workshops, shops selling local produce, and bars and restaurants for a "gastronomic" break.

In the neighbourhood, various not particularly demanding naturalistic excursions are possible, suitable for all the family. There is, for example, the Path of the Dinosaurs at Preone, a didactic path, equipped with panels which explain the geologic and paleontological history of the territory, and give information on the fossils. In the area, in fact, the oldest dinosaur fossils in the world were discovered. The naturalistic position of Preone and the nearby geological museum at Ampezzo are the last stages of an interesting itinerary, ideal for those who wish to learn more about the naturalistic and geological aspects of the Carnia territory.
